On Monday, October 12 the Greater Vancouver Regional Steering Committee (RCSH) on Homelessness launched the fourth annual Homelessness Action Week with a special ‘green graffiti’ event outside the Broadway Skytrain Station.
“Homelessness is an issue for all municipalities in Metro Vancouver,” commented Alice Sundberg, co-chair of the RCSH. “This year there are more than 70 events taking place throughout the lower mainland; and even more counting the other communities in BC and the Yukon.”
At their recent UBCM conference, Mayors and other municipal politicians overwhelmingly endorsed a resolution calling for a national affordable housing strategy. The vote reflected the sense of urgency that many municipal leaders feel about the issue and the need for united action.
Working with the Commercial Drive Business Society, organizers used a stencil and a power washer to leave a clean mark with the website name: stophomelessness.ca. “This is a great way for our business association to get involved,” remarked Michelle Barile, Executive Director of the Commercial Drive Business Society. “Our local business owners care about homelessness and are looking for ways to support solutions.”
